Hyvinkää Church
Hämeenkatu 16, Hyvinkää
The church is open to visitors daily from 9 AM to 4 PM.
Hyvinkää Church was consecrated on 29 January 1961. Designed by Professor Aarno Ruusuvuori, it is a striking example of modern church architecture in Finland.
The church is defined by its distinctive form, built from repeating triangular shapes that create its recognizable, pyramid-like silhouette. Ruusuvuori also designed the broad wooden altar cross, whose welcoming form symbolically embraces the congregation and expresses that everyone is invited to come as they are.
The church continues to attract visitors daily, many drawn by its unique architecture. It has even been listed among the most unusual attractions in Finland. Today, it stands as one of the most prominent landmarks of Hyvinkää.
The bell tower and bells date back to 1960. The church hall provides space for worship, music, and gatherings, and also features a grand piano.
In autumn 2025, the church received a new organ built by the Organ Workshop of Veikko Virtanen. The instrument has 26 stops and is positioned, like its predecessor, in the organ loft against the eastern wall. Its design follows the triangular shape of the rear wall, rising toward the loft edge in harmony with Ruusuvuori’s architecture while meeting the technical requirements of organ building.
The façade of the new organ echoes elements of the church’s original organ (built by Kangasala Organ Factory in 1961). Its design plays with rhythm, perspectives, and the interplay of light and shadow, reflecting the architectural language of the church itself. The façade folds at its peak, creating varied sightlines toward the altar and the nave. From the loft, visitors can also glimpse the inner workings of the instrument through the vertical wooden slats.
The Old Church of Hyvinkää
Uudenmaankatu 13, Hyvinkää.
The Old Church of Hyvinkää is a charming and historic wooden church that reflects the early development of the local community. Originally built as a prayer house in 1896, based on the designs of architect Yrjö Sadenius, it served a growing railway village whose first gatherings were held in the waiting rooms of the Hyvinkää station. The building was expanded in 1923 and consecrated as a church in 1978.
Before the completion of the current main church in 1961, the Old Church served as Hyvinkää’s principal place of worship. Today, it is a popular venue for weddings and intimate gatherings, known for its warm atmosphere and historic character.
Regular events, such as evening services and concerts, are held here, offering visitors a peaceful setting for reflection and cultural experiences.
Kytäjä Church
Palkkisillantie 11, Hyvinkää.
Kytäjä Church is beautifully situated in the heart of nature, surrounded by scenic trails and the nearby Lake Kytäjärvi. Its exterior often reminds visitors of a small Italian-style stone church, blending harmoniously into the peaceful rural landscape.
Completed through the joint efforts of local residents, the church was consecrated on 29 May 1939 by Bishop Aleksi Lehtonen. The land was donated by Kytäjä Manor, and the church itself was designed by the manor’s owner at the time, architect Väinö Vähäkallio. The building was carefully restored in 1998 under the direction of architect Sari Viertiö.
Inside, the church offers a warm and atmospheric setting rich in local history. Notable details include the pulpit painted by artist Kaapo Virtanen, featuring the twelve apostles depicted with local men as models, and a crucifix originating from Oberammergau, Germany.
Kytäjä Church hosts regular monthly services and welcomes visitors to experience the beauty and tranquility of this unique countryside church.
